U10 Head Coach

The Old Pats U10s is made up of over thirty active players, with the key focus on fun and enjoyment.

The players are divided into three mixed ability groups, with several coaches assigned to each squad, with the smaller numbers helping to maximise learning and build friendships.

Our Head Coach, James Hutchison, oversees all squads providing interesting, challenging and fun training sessions that are designed to teach the children the key skills required for rugby and to maximise the potential of all players.

The squads train and play their home matches at The Park Campus, University of Gloucestershire, The Park, Cheltenham. Training is generally between 09.30 and 10.45 every Sunday, unless we have matches when the times may vary.

All training and match day information is communicated to parents and carers via our Teamo management app.

Ware incredibly proud of the progress made in our first full season together, learning the basic principles of Rugby and fostering a strong team spirit that served them very well in all their matches. We’re looking forward to getting back on the training field, with a great turnout every week and new faces joining all the time.

This season

Last year we completed the first full season with the U10 group, with highlights including festivals at Worcester and Bristol, some hard-fought matches against other local clubs, and culminating in a hugely enjoyable tour to Croyde as nearly 80 of us descended on the beach in May.

As U11s, the rugby focus will be on consolidating the rapid progress that was made last year, continuing to work hard on the basic skills of catching, passing, running and tackling. Scrums and rucking were introduced in January, and we’ll continue to develop skills in these areas, and many of the boys are excited about the introduction of kicking to the U11 rules – even if some of the coaches aren’t!

The overall aim, however, remains for the kids to enjoy themselves in training and in matches, as they continue to develop friendships and behaviours that will last a lifetime.

Everyone is welcome to come and join in the fun.

Coaching team and officials

Our coaching team, who are all volunteers, comprises 9 coaches under the leadership of James Hutchison and Mark Harris. Hutch and Mark have both been taking RFU coaching courses, including ‘First Contact’, which is particularly relevant to the younger age groups.

There are also trained first aid reps throughout the group, and all coaches are dedicated to the welfare of the players and committed to inclusive rugby to develop them both as players and individuals. We are very grateful to the hard work and commitment of our coaching team so please give them as much support as you can.

Our ethos

Our Club Ethos, based around the RFU core values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship (TREDS), is at the very heart of everything we do.

We are committed to developing the confidence and self-belief of every player from the U9’s to the Seniors by providing them with the opportunities, encouragement and support they need to enjoy their rugby to the full and fulfil their potential as a player and a teammate.

To this end, the rugby environment we create for our young players, irrespective of ability or experience must be safe, fun, and inclusive.

Old Pats is committed to mixed ability sides offering equal opportunity for all as players develop skills at different ages. Investing in all our players, rather than a select few, results in players, parents, teams, and the club as a whole benefiting in the long term.
